Italian composer Ennio Morricone walked away from the European Film Awards with the coveted European Composer Award 2013. The award comes for his work on “The Best Offer”, directed by Giuseppe Tornator and starring Geoffrey Rush, Jim Sturgess, Sylvia Hoeks and Donald Sutherland.
Morricone is still best known in the public eye for his distinctive music for a series of westerns in the seventies, but has remained an in-demand composer across very many genres since that time. The 85 year-old averages one film per year, with titles as diverse as “Inglorious Basterds”, “Ripley’s Game”, “The Phantom of the Opera”, “Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!” and “Once Upon a Time in New York”.
Morricone is currently working on “L’enfant du Sahara”, directed by Laurent Merlin.
Film composer Mychael Danna received two awards for ‘Life of Pi’, namely that of Film Composer of the Year and Best Original Film Score of the Year, at the 13th World Soundtrack Awards 2013 in Ghent, Belgium.

So I’d suggest they are for people that are serious about the business side of music (because it is a business, remember?).

The World Soundtrack Academy, part of the Ghent Film Festival, has announced the list of its nominees for the 2013 Awards in three of five categories: Film Composer of the Year, Best Original Score of the Year and Best Original Song Written Directly for a Film. The names of the winners will be announced at the World Soundtrack Awards & Concert on Saturday, October 19, the closing night of the 40th edition of Film Fest Ghent. Despite the overall gloom in the industry, more international entertainment lawyers that are members of IAEL attended last year’s Midem music trade fair and conference than ever before. IAEL held its first Legal Summit there.
In 2014, IAEL will present another Legal Summit on February 2, 2014, featuring the Legal Update, Book session and Masterclass, as well as a cocktail party and the annual IAEL members dinner. Co-editors Adrienn Karancsi and Jim Kendrick have been busily preparing our new book, ” Licensing of Music–from BC to AD (Before the Change/After Digital)”.
